Maiden print

In 1989 Tracy Edwards leads the first all-female crew in the Whitbread Round the World Race, a yachting competition that covers 33,000 miles and lasts nine months. Maiden tells the story of this adventure in an epic documentary with a powerful message, celebrating women’s strength, resilience and determination in a world still led by men.

In my illustration you can see the Maiden yacht with all the women on board, sailing towards the future despite huge waves and obstacles. You will recognise The Great Wave by Hokusai as my inspiration, a symbol of the overwhelming ocean. As the writer Ramos said, the wave is the yang and the violence of nature, while the boats in the original artwork represent the yin – the confidence of the fishermen. The women on the Maiden in my illustration are exactly that, confident women tackling sexism and outdated conventions.
