First Man is beautifully directed by Damien Chazelle and it follows Neil Armstrong in the years leading up to the Apollo 11 mission to the Moon in 1969.
A truly captivating movie which explores the story of the first Moon landing with deep humanity, and without glamorising it. Neil Armstrong was described by his family as a “reluctant American hero” and his reserved personality and quiet determination shine in this visually stunning movie with a gorgeous atmospheric soundtrack.
In this print I showed the complexity of Armstrong’s mission: getting to the moon, knowing very well that death was a possibility, while his family was waiting for him on Earth. I picked one of my favourite moments of the film where two blackboards are needed to show the distance between the Moon and the Earth with a straight line. While the movie didn’t show the American flag, I illustrated it here to add a layer of moral contrast.
If you are a fan of Neil Armstrong, of Damien Chazelle, of anything space-related (or all three things, like me!), this print is right for you.
